A lot of people are surprised to discover that Twitter is not popular with teenagers. I can’t tell you how many marketing guys I see wasting time and money marketing teen and tween products on Twitter. You may get the attention of a few parents, but there are other social networks much better for targeting the teenage demographic.

I happen to have a 13-year old sister so I’ve known for a long time that kiddies don’t use Twitter. I’ve asked my sister and her friends why they don’t use Twitter and they say it’s “boring” or “stupid” or they just don’t “get it.”

PC World has an interesting article about this very issue. They found that most teens feel like my little sister does about Twitter. Only 11% of Twitter users are between the ages of 12-17 according to the article. The largest chunk of the Twitter audience is a whopping 45-years old, and the rest fall somewhere between 25-54. When it comes to chatting the vast majority of kids still prefer Instant Messaging rather than Tweeting.

Teens like to chat within their select group of friends. They see no reason to broadcast their chats to thousands of “followers” on Twitter. Also, how many teenagers can keep their thoughts to 140 characters?

The overall point here is for Internet marketers and social media professionals to remember the importance of demographics. Before you waste your time and money or that of you clients — find out if you’re marketing in the right place to the right audience.

This from the FriendFeed blog:

We are happy to announce that Facebook has acquired FriendFeed. As my mom explained to me, when two companies love each other very much, they form a structured investment vehicle…

The FriendFeed team is extremely excited to become a part of the talented Facebook team. We’ve always been great admirers of Facebook, and our companies share a common vision. Now we have the opportunity to bring many of the innovations we’ve developed at FriendFeed to Facebook’s 250 million users around the world and to work alongside Facebook’s passionate engineers to create even more ways for you to easily share with your friends online.

FriendFeed says all FF accounts will continue to operate as normal for the time being, but they’re in the process of working out the long-term integration of the two services.

I’m a big fan of Facebook and FF, so hopefully the two can somehow seamlessly merge and we can enjoy the best of both worlds.

MySpace was the first big social network to really break out and become a nation wide phenomenon. The MySpace craze was initially driven by kids and young people.

As a result, many professionals and other grown folks mistakenly believe social media and social networking is kiddie stuff. The truth is that many adults are on MySpace, but I’ll concede it’s mostly a younger crowd.

Facebook on the other hand is totally different. Facebook is the Myspace for grown-ups — only much better. Not only is Facebook a great way to stay connected with friends and family, but it’s also a great way to network, land jobs, and market products.

Companies not taking advantage of Facebook are at a distinct disadvantage that will only deepen over time.

Web Worker Daily has an excellent post that lists 32 ways to use Facebook for business. You should read it, bookmark it, and send it to friends.

With the rise of social media and social networks one of the problems I’ve had is keeping track of my social identities.

I have many social media streams and figured the logical thing would be to have them all in one place where clients, friends, or whoever can see them easily.

It turns out, there’s quite a few websites aiming to do just that! Charles Hamilton over at Web Worker Daily wrote a great piece on some of the best options available.

Off his list, I’ve personally tried both ClaimID and GizaPage. You can see my profiles on these sites below to get a feel for how they operate.
