Businesses especially need to understand that being on more networks is not necessarily better.

If you’re trying to get your brand some social media exposure for the first time take it slow. Establish a presence on Facebook and Twitter to start with, or maybe Twitter and LinkedIn. You can decide which networks are going to be best for your brand, but the important thing is not to get carried away.

There are too many people who never met a social network they didn’t like — don’t be one of them.

Focusing good quality attention on one or two networks can usually yield better results than spending 3 or 4 minutes on 5 or 6 networks.

Personally, I don’t think you can go wrong focusing on the mighty 3 — Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. However, you may find that you get better results using something else.

Whatever networks you decide to use you should focus on those and don’t allow yourself to be distracted by the new flavor of the week.

Back in August, I told you that Twitter wasn’t very popular with teens. PC World studied the issue and concluded that only about 11% of Twitter users are between the ages of 12-17.

That was then, this is now. New studies conducted by a variety of sources are showing the 12-17 demo is now surging to Twitter. The kids may have been late to the party, but now they’re crashing it.

Brian Solis from PR 2.0 believes as I do that celebrities are the biggest reason for the sudden shift. Twitter has made the everyday lives of celebrities more accessible than ever before and kids are all over it. Celebrities like the Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Lovato, and others have millions of followers and a big chunk of them are in the 12-17 demo.

When Miley Cyrus suddenly deleted her Twitter account recently it was a huge story that rocked the social web for a good two weeks. I even made a video discussing the social media importance of it.

What this means is that Twitter will soon be the most powerful way to market to young people. In the past, companies who marketed to kids didn’t have much success on Twitter — but that is clearly about to change.
