The meteoric rise of Twitter has caused some to wonder if Google’s days are numbered. Some say Twitter search has already surpassed Google in terms of importance.

While I agree that Twitter search is incredibly important, I wouldn’t count Google out anytime soon.

Google has shown itself to be extremely nimble in terms of staying in front of emerging technology trends and putting out new tools and services to take advantage of them.

Therefore it’s no surprise that Google has developed a set of extremely powerful new search options including real-time search.

Take a look this demo from Google:

Some of you may have noticed that Google recently got an update. A new feature called “Search Wiki” has been added to search results along with an up arrow and X symbol next to each result.

Here’s what Google says about it:

SearchWiki lets you customize your Google Web Search results by ranking, removing, and adding notes to them. You’ll see your changes whenever you do the same searches while signed in to your Google Account, or until you decide to undo them. You can also see how other users have tailored any given search results page with their own notes and changes.

Here’s what some critics say about it:

If you haven’t noticed it yet log into your Gmail account or Analytics account and leave yourself logged in … as most of us would do anyway. Then head over to Google and do a search for any term you care to think of. When the SERPS appear check for the new symbols that appear alongside the results.

Now you can adjust your own search results using the symbol with the up-arrow and the cross. So now you may never see anything new in the search results if you have set the SERPS to show you what you want to see. Whoever thought that one up was a real genius … after all people don’t really use Google to find new information do they?

But that’s not the best example of total stupidity when it comes to these new tools that people can use to improve their search results … well I guess Google thinks that it’s going to improve the search results … but I doubt anyone else does. The best example of total stupidity comes with the little text bubble that you see sitting next to the ‘Similar pages’ link.

Click on that text bubble and you can add your comments about the site and if your search returns a site that someone has already commented on then you’ll see their comments. Now how helpful is that?

The arguments the critics make about it are justified, however I’m taking a wait and see approach to this thing. I think Seach Wiki thing is the beginning of something much bigger down the road for Google. I would be surprised if the criticisms leveled at it hadn’t already been addressed. We don’t really know how or even if Search Wiki will influence search results over the long term.
